Newborn Routines That Actually Work (and Don’t Make You Cry)

Updated: Jun 19

Because your baby didn’t read the parenting books either.

Those early weeks with a newborn? Pure chaos. One minute you’re up at 3 a.m. wondering if the baby’s hungry or just practicing opera. The next, you're re-googling "how long should newborns sleep?" for the fourth time that day.

So let’s be real: newborn routines aren’t about Pinterest-perfect schedules. They’re about barely-organized survival with a touch of structure. As a parent who has been through the fog (a few times), here’s what i've learned about baby routines that actually work.

  1. Start with a Rhythm, Not a Schedule

Babies don’t care if it’s 8 a.m. or 3 p.m. Instead of setting the clock, think in cycles: feed, burp, diaper, play, sleep. This flexible rhythm helps you learn your baby’s natural flow without losing your mind.

  2. Create a Bedtime Wind-Down (Even if It’s at 2 a.m.)

A warm bath, low lights, and soft music can signal sleepytime. Repeating the same steps before bed helps set expectations, even if the "bedtime" shifts by four hours every night.

  3. Use Daylight to Your Advantage

Expose your baby to natural daylight during the day and keep things dim and boring at night. It helps set their internal clock so eventually, everyone gets more sleep. Hallelujah!

  4. Tag-Team When You Can

If there are two caregivers in the mix, trade off shifts. You do 10–2, they do 2–6. Or nap relay. Or rock-paper-scissors for diaper duty. Whatever works.

  5. Don’t Be Afraid of Flex Days

Some days are all contact naps and couch cuddles. Others might be filled with errands and chaos. A good routine leaves space for both without guilt.

  6. Track the Milestones (and the Madness)

Our Cheers to You, Baby book was made for moments like these: your first time sleeping for more than 3 hours in a row. The first time the baby smiled. Use our milestone stickers and photo spots to remember the little wins that made it all worthwhile!

Final Word: Progress, Not Perfection

Your newborn routine will look different from someone else’s — and that’s okay. What matters most is finding a rhythm that keeps you sane and your baby fed, clean, and (sometimes) asleep.

You’re doing great. Really. And if you need a laugh or a space to reflect, we’ve got a baby book for that. Order your CheersToYouBaby Milestone Book Today!

Cheers!
